In 1990, Judd purchased a former grocery store located in downtown Marfa. He converted the 6,000-square foot building into a studio and removed all of the machinery, the drop ceiling, and installed skylights. It remains installed with long worktables and shelving whereupon he reviewed prototypes and samples for fabrication, making it possible to trace the artist’s concept development and work process. The building contains artworks in a variety of states—complete, incomplete, and rejected.
