Seven works were made in this form and configuration. The first was begun in 1964 and completed ten years later. When initially constructed, the fronts of the two wooden boxes were open, their interiors divided by four horizontal partitions. In the spring of 1974, the fronts were closed at the artist’s direction and the boxes repainted in fluorescent orange and the tube in blue lacquer.
A second work was made in 1981 with an unpainted tube and boxes painted in cobalt blue. A similar third work was made in 1982 with the boxes painted in red acrylic.
The work installed in the Art Studio is painted chartreuse and is one of four works in this form made in 1986. These works have unpainted aluminum tubes with boxes painted green, cerulean blue, chartreuse, and cadmium red light respectively.1
