In Conversation: Roberta Smith and Caitlin Murray

Roberta Smith, Co-Chief Art Critic of the New York Times, and Caitlin Murray, Director of Archives and Programs, discuss aspects of Donald Judd’s writings the 1950s and 1960s with a focus on his early art criticism. Murray and Smith will look at Judd’s canonical essay “Specific Objects” (1964) and an important early review of an exhibition of work by Lee Bontecou (1962).

This talk is the first in a series of conversations that examine Donald Judd’s writings.To support greater access to his writings, Judd Foundation has released a selection of his essays by decade. Conversations with writers, artists, and art historians will explore the context of his committed writing practice, while focusing on close readings of specific essays.
