Caitlin Murray, Director of Archives and Programs for Judd Foundation, in conversation with artist Santa Barraza.
A native of Kingsville, Texas, Santa Contreras Barraza is a contemporary Chicana/Tejana artist and recently retired Professor of Art at Texas A&M University at Kingsville. Her artwork has been widely exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Austria, France, and Germany. Her work depicts the historical, emotional, and spiritual land between Mexico and Texas, between the real and the celestial, and between present reality and the mythic world of the ancient Aztecs and Mayas. This talk will focus on the role of nepantla, a Nauhuatl word meaning “in-between space”, in Barraza’s work. Barraza runs the gallery Barraza Fine Art, LLC in Kingsville. Texas Talks Art is a multi-institutional initiative intended to introduce the work of artists across the state of Texas to a wider audience. Taking the form of virtual 30-minute lunchtime talks, the series features 50 Texas artists and artist collectives in conversation with 50 Texas curators beginning in January 2021.
