Visiting Scholar: Tony Berlant

Wednesday, June 5
6:00pm
Crowley Theater
Marfa, TX

Artist Tony Berlant discusses Decoding Mimbres, an exhibition of Mimbres ceramics that he organized at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2018. The talk will explore the possible botanical basis, mostly relating to the datura plant, for the otherwise abstract design work in this extraordinary ceramic tradition of the Mogollon Culture. Tony Berlant is an artist and co-author of Walk in Beauty: the Navajo and Their Blankets, one of the primary books on the subject of Navajo textiles. He also helped the artist Donald Judd assemble his collection of Navajo blankets and Mimbres pottery, now on permanent view at La Mansana de Chinati/The Block.

This program is part of the Visiting Scholar program at Judd Foundation presented in partnership with Marfa Book Co.
